Agape Care Volunteers Recognized at Annual South Carolina Governor’s Awards
Spartanburg, SC, October 16, 2020 — Agape Care volunteers were honored twice at the 2020 Governor’s Volunteer Awards, hosted by the South Carolina Association for Volunteer Administration (SCAVA). These annual awards recognize the state’s dedicated volunteers whose efforts meaningfully impact their communities; this year, 10 awards were given out across 10 categories.
Colonel Claud Schmid, who has been active in Agape Care’s veteran-to-veteran program since 2019, received the Community Leader Award. This recognition is given to an individual who has provided broad and exceptional leadership to causes, programs, and/or projects that address human needs.
Colonel Schmid, who served 31 years in the U.S. Army and received two Bronze Stars, founded Veteran’s Last Patrol, a nonprofit that connects veteran volunteers to veterans in hospice, helping guide them through their life stories to a more peaceful ending. Recently, Colonel Schmid honored an Agape Care veteran hospice patient by bringing a caravan of several veterans to the patient’s home, where they honored his service.
The Landrum Quilters received the Volunteer Group Award, given to a group that has been instrumental in designing or sponsoring a program or project to benefit an individual, organization, or the community, demonstrating and performing with commitment and initiative.
Since officially forming in 1980, the Landrum Quilters have grown to more than 150 members, all of whom share their love of creativity through quilting and fabric art. Their work with Agape Care’s Upstate Community Hospice House has brought peace and comfort to many patients, and since 2012, they have donated nearly 1,000 quilts, 214 pillows, two fleece throws, and 26 masks to the hospice.
“We can’t think of anyone more deserving of recognition than Colonel Schmid and the Landrum Quilters, and we’re honored that they choose to volunteer with our organization,” Agape Care Director of Volunteer Services Tracy Roberts said. “Anyone who has spent time with our volunteers can attest to their genuine kindness and desire to give back to our hospice organization and patients.”
